Apple faces a roughly $113.4 billion revenue hurdle and a $1.99 earnings-per-share benchmark. For QQQ, the bigger question is whether its holiday outlook can restore confidence after the technology selloff—or expose how much optimism remains in the price.
Apple can give the Nasdaq-100 a powerful earnings catalyst. It cannot, by itself, settle the sector’s concerns about artificial-intelligence investment, cash generation and financing costs. A profitable quarter is widely expected; a positive share-price reaction still has to be earned.
Earnings preview: November 2, 2026, before Apple’s pending fiscal fourth-quarter report. Forecasts below are analyst estimates, not reported results. Dollar figures are nominal US dollars; company fiscal-quarter figures are not seasonally adjusted.
Apple’s earnings hurdle: growth is already expected
FactSet consensus reported by MarketWatch puts September-quarter revenue at $113.4 billion and EPS at $1.99. MarketBeat reports the same rounded estimates and the following year-earlier comparisons.
| Metric | Consensus | Year earlier | Y/Y change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $113.4bn | $102.47bn | +10.7% |
| EPS | $1.99 | $1.85 | +7.6% |

The gap matters: expected sales growth exceeds expected EPS growth. Investors need to establish whether costs, product mix, taxes or other factors are limiting the earnings conversion. EPS also depends on the share count; it is not a substitute for analysing operating profit and cash flow.
Why QQQ needs more than an Apple beat
Reuters’ October 30 market report linked technology weakness to Amazon’s AI spending plans and Intel’s cash-burn warning. The concern is increasingly practical: how much cash leaves today, and when does the return arrive?
Apple offers a different business mix from companies building enormous AI infrastructure networks. That can support relative demand for its shares. But money rotating into Apple from other QQQ holdings may cushion the fund without producing a broad recovery.
As explained in AlphaTraderNews’ analysis of AI debt, CDS trading and infrastructure costs, accounting earnings and cash available after investment can tell different stories. Higher revenue is encouraging; durable cash generation is the harder test.
The holiday-quarter outlook could outweigh the reported EPS
S&P Global’s October 29 Visible Alpha preview sets out these benchmarks:
| Metric | September quarter, fiscal Q4 2026 | December quarter, fiscal Q1 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $113.6bn | $153.0bn |
| iPhone revenue | $56.4bn | $88.9bn |
| Services revenue | $31.7bn | Not provided in the cited preview |
| EPS | Not provided in the cited preview | $2.93 |

The central issue is whether management’s outlook supports those holiday expectations. Demand must become shipments, and shipments must generate profit. Long delivery waits can reflect strong demand, constrained supply, or both.
Reuters’ Apple preview identifies rising memory costs, AI strategy and the holiday outlook as key questions. It also reports foldable-screen complaints and supply constraints. The investment implications are conditional: replacements can add costs, while late deliveries can push revenue into a later quarter.
Compare margins carefully
Apple’s June-quarter release reported $109.4 billion revenue, up 16%; $2.02 EPS, up 29%; and 50.1% gross margin. However, tariff refunds added approximately 2 percentage points to gross margin and $0.11 to EPS.
Subtracting those disclosed benefits gives approximately 48.1% gross margin and $1.91 EPS. This is a simple analytical adjustment, not a company-issued alternative earnings measure. A sequential comparison that ignores the refund could exaggerate subsequent deterioration.
Growth has a price—and Apple’s price leaves less room for error
S&P Global’s preview placed Apple at 33 times fiscal-2027 earnings, with a $342 consensus price target implying slightly negative upside at its observation date. That does not establish that the stock must fall. It does undermine a blanket claim that Apple is cheap.
Separately, MarketWatch reported 35.8 times forward earnings, near multiyear highs. Its forward period differs from S&P’s fiscal-year measure; the multiples should remain separate.
A company can beat earnings and still lose market value. If investors reduce the price they will pay for future profit, a better earnings forecast may fail to offset the valuation decline.
| Change in forward EPS estimate | Change in P/E multiple | Implied price change |
|---|---|---|
| +5% | Unchanged | +5.0% |
| +5% | −10% | −5.5% |
| −5% | −10% | −14.5% |
Calculation: price change = [(1 + forward EPS change) × (1 + P/E change) − 1] × 100, with changes entered as decimals. These examples concern revisions to forward earnings, not the size of a single-quarter EPS surprise.
How much Apple can move QQQ
Invesco’s dated holdings snapshot put Apple at 7.99% of QQQ on October 29, 2026. Using that weight, Apple’s direct contribution is approximately:
| Apple share-price change | Approximate QQQ return contribution |
|---|---|
| +5% | +0.40 percentage points |
| +10% | +0.80 percentage points |
| −5% | −0.40 percentage points |
| −10% | −0.80 percentage points |
Source weight: Invesco QQQ holdings. Calculations multiply the dated holding weight by the hypothetical stock return. Weights change; these examples exclude other constituent moves and small fund-tracking effects.
Even a 10% Apple rally contributes only about 0.8 percentage points directly. A larger QQQ advance would require gains elsewhere. Conversely, broader selling could overwhelm Apple’s positive contribution.
Beat, meet or miss: what changes the outlook?
| Outcome | What matters beneath the headline | Possible implication |
|---|---|---|
| Beat and stronger outlook | Healthy holiday demand, credible delivery capacity and resilient margins | Supports Apple and may encourage wider technology buying |
| Small beat, ordinary outlook | Little improvement in forward estimates | Initial relief can fade if optimism was already priced in |
| EPS beat, weaker business signals | Temporary benefits or share-count effects mask softer operating trends | Headline strength may fail to sustain a rally |
| Miss driven by supply | Orders remain healthy but revenue is delayed | Reaction depends on delivery visibility and costs |
| Demand miss and margin pressure | Weaker sales outlook alongside falling profitability | Risk of earnings downgrades and valuation compression |
The road ahead: watch the forecast revisions and the breadth
A more convincing QQQ recovery would combine stable or rising earnings estimates, better cash-flow visibility and participation beyond Apple. Treasury yields also matter: a higher discount rate can reduce the value investors assign to distant profits.
The first earnings reaction is therefore only one observation. Watch whether gains hold after management’s outlook, whether semiconductor and other major holdings participate, and whether subsequent analyst revisions improve the earnings base supporting the fund.
QQQ, the Nasdaq-100 cash index and NQ futures have different price scales. A 26,000 index reference is not a QQQ price target. Nasdaq’s October 30 cash-index close was 28,384.85, placing 26,000 approximately 8.4% below that reference. An NQ level additionally requires a specified contract and timestamp.
Apple can supply the catalyst. A lasting QQQ recovery needs the rest of the portfolio to confirm it. The opportunity is a stronger outlook than investors currently expect; the danger is paying a premium for growth that is already in the forecasts.
